Stuart Brown has been with One Guarantee since day one, so we sat down with him to find out more about his role and the biggest challenges facing clients today.

How long have you worked for One Guarantee?

I have been at One Guarantee since the beginning. I still remember the phone call from Robin Plaster (One Guarantee’s CEO) to say that he had secured insurer capacity. That’s when the fun really started as we had to compile our whole proposition starting immediately.

Tell us about your previous experience in the field?

My corporate insurance portfolio has always been heavily weighted towards construction, so I had already placed a few Latent Defects policies in the past. I also knew from previous conversations with Robin that the sector was very dynamic – he was right.

What are your favourite aspects of your role?

My colleague Henry Plaster and I have always worked hard to ensure that all One Guarantee staff are empowered and that all their thoughts and opinions are listened to. We want staff to challenge themselves as well as each other to ensure that One Guarantee constantly evolves. Without this engagement we would not have got to where we are. Listening and watching them discuss ideas and ways to improve things is therefore very satisfying.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Hugo the dog

I enjoy walking my dog first thing in the morning as it gives me time to clear my head. I often joke that my dog, Hugo, is a Non-Executive of One Guarantee as he has to listen to me non-stop during the day as well as act as a sounding board for my ideas.

Once my children have gone to school, I tend to start work between 8-8.30am. I am more switched on in the mornings so I make sure that tasks or projects requiring my full concentration are done earlier in the day. The One Guarantee team catches up at 10am most days to have a chat and discuss work. Throughout Covid-19 we have worked hard to keep all staff in contact with each other but being back in the office has certainly given us some much-needed normality.

I then try to do as many calls as possible during the middle of the day and over lunch, and review emails and other tasks in the afternoon.

What are your clients’ biggest challenges?

Covid-19 has impacted the entire construction sector. Supply chain pressure, rising costs and planning delays have created a perfect storm of issues which we are helping to manage.

Our part of the industry has also been affected; changing insurer capacity means that quote turnaround times are being affected too. At One Guarantee we try to remain engaged with developers throughout the entire build and beyond. Our role is to make the Latent Defects Insurance warranty purchase as smooth and pain-free as possible.
